Novel Contributions of the Dissertation
On the basis of previous studies on stakeholders, green procurement, and firm performance, this dissertation develops an integrated approach to explain the process from stakeholder influence to the implementation of green procurement and from green procurement to environmental and financial performance in the context of Vietnamese garment enterprises. The major contributions of the dissertation are as follows:
First, the dissertation develops and empirically tests an integrated model that clarifies the differences in the levels of influence exerted by different stakeholder groups on green procurement in Vietnamese garment enterprises. Rather than aggregating these influences into a single form of general pressure, the dissertation distinguishes three sources of external pressure, namely customer pressure, competitive pressure, and regulatory pressure, while also considering top management sensitivity as an internal driver. The empirical results show that all four factors positively promote green procurement, but to different extents. Customer pressure has the strongest influence, followed by competitive pressure, top management sensitivity, and regulatory pressure. These findings highlight the heterogeneity in the sources, power, and mechanisms through which stakeholders influence green procurement decisions in garment enterprises.
Second, the dissertation establishes and empirically tests the mediating role of green procurement in the mechanism through which stakeholder influence is transformed into firm performance. The results indicate that green procurement mediates relationships between the four factors: customer pressure, competitive pressure, regulatory pressure, and top management sensitivity and the two dimensions of firm performance, namely environmental performance and financial performance. Accordingly, the dissertation clarifies the transmission mechanism from stakeholder influence to green procurement to firm performance, rather than examining separately the relationships between stakeholders and green practices or between green procurement and performance, as in many previous studies. This finding demonstrates that external pressures and managerial orientations are translated into outcomes only when enterprises internalize them into specific green procurement practices.
Third, the dissertation provides empirical evidence on the ability of green procurement to simultaneously create environmental and financial value in Vietnamese garment enterprises. The empirical results show that green procurement has positive effects on both environmental performance and financial performance, with a stronger effect on financial performance. The case studies of Song Hong Garment Joint Stock Company and Viet Tien Garment Corporation further clarify this value-creation mechanism: green procurement helps control materials, accessories, and chemicals; standardize and develop suppliers; enhance traceability; reduce defects and compliance risks; and support customer and order retention. These findings demonstrate that, in the context of the Vietnamese garment industry, green procurement is not merely a tool for meeting environmental requirements but can become an upstream supply chain management capability that connects market and institutional requirements with firm performance outcomes.
Fourth, the dissertation contributes context-specific empirical evidence and a methodological approach to research on green procurement in Vietnam. International measurement scales for stakeholder pressure, top management sensitivity, green procurement, and firm performance were adapted through a literature review, expert consultation, and a pilot survey to ensure their suitability for the context of Vietnamese garment enterprises. At the same time, the dissertation combines PLS-SEM model testing with case studies of two garment enterprises, thereby not only determining the magnitude and direction of the relationships but also explaining how these effects occur in practice. This approach contributes additional firm-level empirical evidence on green procurement in a major export-oriented industry within a developing economy.
